It was just after seven pm on a Thursday and though we were promised a dry day, it hadn't stopped raining! Dan and I were sitting commenting on the weekend's football, prepared for the next job of the day to arrive. Finally we got the call from a woman on a business excursion who had arrived at the Esso petrol station in Beam Bridge and filled the wrong fuel in her diesel wife's Mitsubishi L300 lease car by mistake. She was fairly affected it seemed, saying "I simply cannot believe I've ruined the car! I am just so used to putting petrol in my petrol car I completely did not remember that I was operating a diesel!" I just advised her to calm down and not to worry, also that such things sadly happen. She managed to maneuver the vehicle into a protected spot and, since it was only a short distance from us, we could reach the lady right away. The contaminated fuel was taken out and she was able to go home to the Premier Inn she was staying in. Although we got pretty wet, it was all rewarding seeing her drive away relaxed and not so concerned. One more misfuel correction in Somerset well done in my mind!

The 3 things you HAVE TO know about a Misfuel!

AdBlue In Diesel

Throughout Somerset we are discovering more and more examples of AdBlue contamination whereby an individual has put AdBlue directly into their diesel tank. This is to a certain extent a result of drivers not understanding the right way to to make use of (be aware: it's in reality not a fuel additive), and partly due to the fact that the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are frequently right adjacent to each other on the vehicle.

Now, what is the matter with having AdBlue in the diesel car?

Since AdBlue is predominantly ionised water, it's as bad as putting water in to your tank. Diesel and water will not blend at all and attempting to run a diesel car on water is not going to work. In addition to this, the urea is fairly corrosive to the fuel system pipes and seals and is prone to crystallisation, clogging injectors and filters. If in case you put AdBlue in a fuel tank remove it right away. And of course don't turn over the motor - not even to maneuver it to a parking bay. In case you did start the vehicle you may in all likelihood need to have the complete fuel system cleaned and fuel filters replaced.

In case you find yourself in this position do not fret or panic! Contact us, the UK’s Number 1 fuel contamination business. Our experts have the practical know-how and experience to have you back on the road rapidly and efficiently, no mess, no fuss.

Boat Fuel Drains

If you find there is the incorrect fuel, or even contaminated fuel (most typically water contaminated or old fuel) in a boat we can help you get it out. Providing the boat is either on land, or parked close to parking bay we will be able to access the tanks and remove the contaminated fuel. We have completed many fuel drains at docks and boatyards in the uk.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
